HOW TO HEAL ULCERS WITH DIET

How to Heal Ulcers With Diet
Ulcers--peptic and stomach--are sores in the esophageal, stomach or intestinal linings. According to the Mayo Clinic, peptic ulcers can be triggered by Helicobacter pylori bacteria, as well as the frequent use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Alcohol consumption and smoking also can cause peptic ulcers. Although ulcers cannot be healed with diet alone, minimizing acid in the diet can help relieve ulcer pain and prevent irritation. An ulcer-friendly diet should be used in conjunction with medical treatment, like antacids, acid blockers and antibiotic medications, to kill Helicobacter pylori bacteria if it is present.

Step 1

Eat 6 to 10 servings of any of the following grains per day: Oatmeal, cream of wheat, cream of rice, mashed potatoes, cereal, rice, pasta, bread and saltine crackers.

Step 2

Eat four to eight servings of the following fruits and vegetables per day: Apples, peaches, canned fruit, applesauce, grapes, banana, kiwi, melon, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, salad greens (like spinach and lettuce) and mild vegetables that do not cause gas (green beans, carrots, celery and bell peppers).

Step 3

Drink 6 to 8 cups of any of the following beverages per day: Water, apple juice, grape juice, herbal tea, caffeine-free drinks.

Step 4

Avoid the following spicy, irritating or gas-causing foods: Broccoli, alcohol, black pepper, hot peppers, coffee, black tea, soda with caffeine, other caffeinated beverages, chocolate, tomatoes, citrus fruits and juices, cloves, garlic, onions and cloves.

Step 5

Consume three or fewer dairy products per day. Yogurt is the best dairy product to eat if you must have dairy because it contains active cultures to settle the gastrointestinal tract.

Step 6

Eat three balanced meals at the same time every day. Avoid eating between meals if possible, as this can cause additional acid buildup in the stomach.
