Natural Herbs for Vaginal Dryness

Ginseng may be helpful in reducing vaginal dryness.

Vaginal dryness is a common complaint among women in menopause, and is generally caused by a change in hormone levels. About 40% percent of menopausal women have some unwanted vaginal symptoms, says the Mayo Clinic, including dryness, itching and burning. Other symptoms may accompany vaginal dryness during menopause, like hot flashes and severe mood changes. Herbal remedies may help relieve these symptoms; however, herbs can also produce side effects, so consult your health practitioner before starting any new treatments.

Black Cohosh

Black cohosh, an herb used extensively by herbalists for women in menopause, produces estrogen-like qualities, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, or NCCAM. This herb may help relieve vaginal dryness, itching, burning, painful intercourse and other menopausal symptoms. Black cohosh is available in supplements and as an extract at health-food stores. Consult with your health practitioner or an herbalist before using this herb.

Ginseng

The ancient herb ginseng, used for centuries by the Chinese for a variety of ailments, may also help you with vaginal dryness, itching and burning pain, according to Vanderbilt University. It possesses properties similar to estrogen and may help keep vaginal walls supple even after menopause. In addition, ginseng may help soothe your moods, aid in sleep and reduce hot flashes. It is available at health-food stores and from Chinese herbalists.

Wild Yam Extract

Wild yam extract is another widely used herb for the treatment of menopausal and peri-menopausal symptoms, according to Medline Plus. According to the "The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook," it is indicated for vaginal dryness, irritation, intermittent spotting, mood swings and depression. Wild yam extract is available at health-food stores, but consult with an herbalist or health practitioner before using this herb.

Homeopathic Cimicifuga Racemosa

Although Cimicifuga racemosa is a homeopathic remedy, it is derived from the herb black cohosh, and has similar properties, according to Dr. William Boericke in "Materia Medica and Repertory." The remedy is recommended for women experiencing a wide range of menopausal symptoms, including vaginal dryness and irritation, moodiness, depression, severe headaches--especially on the right side of the head and neck--and hot flashes. Cimicifuga is available over-the-counter at health-food stores and from online homeopathic pharmacies. Contact a homeopath before using this remedy for dosing guidelines.
